Same-sex marriage comes to the UK! Diana would have been so proud. The Queen’s approval was the final formality necessary for this bill to become law. The new law enables gay couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales, provided that the religious institution consents. The Church of England, the country’s official faith, is barred from performing such ceremonies. Oops.
The Parliament made the decision to legalize same-sex marriage and the Queen followed up with her approval. Even though the Prime minister had backed the law, it divided the Conservative Party, and spurred lively debates in the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
The Bill was introduced by the British Government in January and now clears the way for the first same-sex marriages starting next summer.
To all of you queers on the other side of the pond—glad you finally got most of those bits and bobs taken care of…Congratulations!
