Do Lesbians Know How to Sing & Dance?

A few years ago I got hooked on the web series Girl Trash. It was geared to a young “Lip Service” kind of audience who had fallen in love with the dynamic and love struck sterile couple called Spashley on South of Nowhere.  I was curious to see what Angela Robinson would do with her just released full length movie, “Girl Trash All Night Long”. To say the least, it is fantastic. The comedy musical we’ve all been waiting for. It is not the Glee knock-off that garnered Oscar buzz for Pitch Perfect in 2012. It is better.

So why has it taken nearly twenty years to bring a rip-roaring lesbian musical to the screen? Twenty years? Yes, because most of you may not remember the all time campiest and best lesbian musical of all time,  Isle of Lesbos (1997). Diana Burbano and Kirsten Holly Smith (Forever Dusty the Musical on Broadway) star in IOL. And girls, they can really sing!

I caught up with Diana Burbano, who lives in Long Beach, CA to ask a couple questions about this movie that contains some of the best music you will ever hear outside of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  Diana played Viv in Isle of Lesbos.

When asked about the experience of co-starring in IOL, Diane said, “Hey Jan. I think being compared to The Rocky Horror is wonderful and flattering. If IOL had even a little of the influence of Rocky I know I for one would be proud.  We had a crazy time doing it. I know we had hopes that it would become an underground hit, mostly because it was so matter of fact about “same sex love”

We all felt that the message was one that needed to be heard and loudly. Hard to believe that it’s taken 20 years for America to catch up to the IOL and start accepting marriage and love for EVERYONE.”

There have been some incredible gay musicals. I can still hear Harvey Fierstein saying “I’ve slept with more men than are named in the Bible- Old and New Testament alike” in Torch Song Trilogy.  Love that line and I am sure there are many lesbians who can tweak this and relate. Not me of course.  Then there was La Cage aux Folles OR Priscilla Queen of the Desert, but I am telling you, you just have to find a copy of Isle of Lesbos. Sit back with your popcorn, your rah rah gang and enjoy a campy and glorious lesbian musical that set the stage, albeit nearly twenty years later, for Girl Trash All Night Long.

You can purchase a copy of IOL here. View the trailer here on YouTube, or you can buy it off Amazon here.
