Lesbians! Don’t Be Afraid of ‘Vagina Wolf’

Last night I curled up on the sofa with my chenille comforter and pot of tea and watched Elizabeth Taylor scream at Richard Burton in the Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Well what better way to get that image out of my mind than to download Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf? from Wolfe Video. And to be clear, Wolfe Video is not an alias for Vagina Wolfe. Anna Margarita Albelo is writer and star of this brilliant comedy revolving around the remake of Taylor and Burton’s 1966 $7.5,000,000 film with the exception that Albelo is Burton (George) and the incredible Guinevere Turner is Taylor (Martha). Yes, an all female cast tackles Anna’s script.

Guinevere Turner takes on the role of Penelope/Martha with intense over the top flair. I always wondered what “vamping” was. Guinevere shows us. There are times when shades of Liz T can be seen in Guin’s demeanor and presence. Beauty yes, but more important is her performance. I laughed like I haven’t laughed in a very long time when she and Anna come together as lesbians in the filming of this dream film.

Underneath it all is Anna’s quest for a successful life. She wants a life filled with love and sex and passion and, well, everything we all want.

Of course this means she needs a muse. Who better to be her muse than the sexy lesbian “Stud” Katia Amour played way too well by Janina Gavankar. Remember her as Popi in the L-Word and her often-naked presence on HBO’s True Blood. She nearly steals the movie from Anna and Guinevere. I say nearly because I believe Anna and Guin are incredible together. Remember Guinevere won the Grand Jury Award as Outstanding Actress in a Feature Film in 2013 at Outfest Film Festival in LA for this role. And girls, she earned it!

whos-afraid-of-vagina-wolf-posterThis film reminded me a bit of Foxy Merkins. It has that same quick wit and complexity that will absolutely have you watching it many times to see what you missed when you were trying to catch your breath. I rarely go out on a limb and say “buy it” but this time I will. I’ve never quite understood watching a movie over and over, but there are those movies that keep drawing us back. This is one of those campy, over the top, make you laugh and muse over a muse kind of films.

Check it out at Wolfe Video (remember not related to Vagina Wolf) and know that lesbian films will continue to be made as long as we support them. I mean support them financially so filmmakers can create them and support them financially through renting and buying them. Just so we are clear, I am not connected to Wolfe Video or any other film distributors. I just believe in great lgbt films. Who’s Afraid of Vagina Wolf? is one of them.

Check out this fun Outfest review on Vagina.
